[The Hajj of al-Ḥabīb Abū Bakr]
So I say:
I heard from the words of my master, as has been mentioned previously, that he performs Hajj every year, and the people hear [him] on the day the pilgrims arrive.
This is similar to what al-Ḥabīb Aḥmad ibn Zayn al-Ḥabshī said, for outwardly he never performed Hajj, but he said:
"Indeed, there are men of Allah around whom the Ka‘bah circumambulates, and I am among them."
And likewise, what al-Ḥabīb Muḥammad ibn Hādī ibn Ḥasan mentioned in his collection of sayings — may Allah have mercy on him —:
One day, during a lesson with al-Ḥabīb Aḥmad ibn Zayn al-Ḥabshī on the chapter of Hajj, they read, and he elaborated in the explanation, encouraged those present to perform Hajj, and gave them abundant hope in its merits as a motivation for them.
Among those present, someone thought to himself:
"Your Ḥabīb commands you to perform Hajj while he himself has not done so outwardly."
When the gathering dispersed, this man was unable to stand.
Al-Ḥabīb Aḥmad said to him:
"Get up! Why don’t you get up with the others?"
The man replied:
"O Ḥabīb, I want to get up, but I can’t — something is holding me down."
Then al-Ḥabīb Aḥmad said:
"Perhaps you said something in your heart against me?"
He replied:
"Yes, I said: ‘Your Ḥabīb commands Hajj, yet he has not performed it, like one who commands prayer but does not pray.’"
So al-Ḥabīb Aḥmad said to him:
"Through this (inner objection), Allah makes the Ka‘bah circumambulate around such men, and I am among them. And you — adhere to proper manners, and beware of such things."
Al-Ḥabīb Aḥmad ibn Zayn was granted the spiritual station (maqām) of al-Ḥabīb ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī.
When the station of al-Jīlānī was presented to al-Ḥabīb ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥaddād, he said:
"Give it to Aḥmad ibn Zayn al-Ḥabshī."
And our master, ʿAbd al-Qadir al-Jilanī, was among those around whom the Ka‘bah circumambulates as he said in one of his poems:
"Every pole (quṭb) performs ṭawāf around the House seven times,
While I am the House — the tents make ṭawāf around me."
And our master, al-Ḥabīb Abū Bakr ibn Muḥammad al-Saqqaf — may Allah have mercy on him — inherited the state and station of our master al-Jīlānī.
So it was said to him:
"O master al-Ḥabib Abu Bakr — just as it was said to your ancestor, al-Ḥabīb ʿAbd al-Qadir al-Jailani..."
And it is narrated from his grandfather, our master al-Ḥabīb ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Saqqāf, that he once intended to perform Hajj and set out from Tarīm for that purpose.
When he reached al-Jawf, the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions came to him and said:
"Return to Tarīm and dwell therein."
He replied:
"But I have set out intending to perform Hajj."
They said:
"Even so, return to Tarīm."
So he returned and did not perform Hajj.
Whenever someone asked him about his Hajj, he would reply:
"As for outwardly, I have not performed Hajj."
May Allah benefit us by them, their secrets, and their spiritual sights.
May He grant all of us the fulfillment of our wishes through their sanctity,
May He grant us Hajj to the Sacred House of Allah and the visitation of the grave of our Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ,
May He grant us guidance, and enable us — and our families — to follow their path.
Āmīn.
